“This one is called Sand-in-Eye.”

In a remote village, high on ocean-crashed cliffs, was born a girl. Like her grandmother and father, she was raised with the skills to harvest the village’s greatest treasure – pearls – to trade with the few merchants who risked a dangerous journey for rich reward. Diving from the top of the cliffs with spear and bladders of air to plunge like a knife to the oyster beds far beneath the surface, this became her greatest thrill and that of her younger brother.

One fateful day, brother and sister found one of the mythical giant oysters. With little air to spare, they pried it open and retrieved a perfect giant pearl. The oyster snapped her brother’s spear before they could escape and it closed upon his foot. Despite their struggles they could not free him. Finally, she hacked his foot with her knife, the mangled stump trailing blood as she bore him to the surface. But when she reached the air, barely alive herself, he was dead.

The village mourned, all except one. A trader saw the great pearl and stole away with it before it could be buried with the dead boy. To find him and take back what was stolen, she has left her village and all that she understands to visit the civilized lands that terrify her.

For her own protection, she has disguised herself as a boy. For her tears, she has called herself in the common tongue, Sand-in-Eye.
